Why Be Tested For HIV?

Worldwide, somebody is infected with HIV every 8 seconds.

As of 10/19/2005, estimated worldwide HIV infections were 64,826,720 .

More than half of all new infections occur among young people between the ages of 15 to 24.  African Americans accounted for 61 percent of new HIV diagnoses in people ages 13-24. An estimated 5,000 to 6,000 young persons aged 15 to 24 years acquire HIV each day.

Between 11 and 15% of U.S. AIDS cases occur in people over age 50.

The availability of new more potent anti-HIV drug combinations has helped people with HIV live longer, healthier lives. However, availability of antiretroviral treatment remains
an issue in developing countries.

HIV infection is considered a treatable condition. Early recognition of an HIV-positive status has many benefits.

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced a new recommendation for routine HIV testing. The recommendation calls for testing patients aged 13–64 years during all health-care visits.

APTIMA HIV-1 RNA Qualitative Assay is a newer test to help diagnose HIV-1 infection. The test can be used to detect early HIV-1 infection before the appearance of antibodies to HIV-1. In October 2006, the FDA granted marketing approval for the PROCLEIX ULTRIO assay. The assay was approved to screen donated blood, plasma, organs and tissue for HIV-1 and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in individual blood donations or in pools of up to 16 blood samples, and to detect the presence of hepatitis B virus (HBV).
