FOOD - DRUG INTERACTIONS
IN HIV/AIDS
Zaneta M. Pronsky, MS, RD, FADA is the author of Food Medication Interactions and co-author of HIV Medications - Food Interactions. She is a consultant dietitian and nationally known speaker on the subject of food and medication interactions. Sister Jeanne P. Crowe, PharmD, RPh is the Director of Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacist for Camilla Hall in Immaculata, Pennsylvania. Sister Crowe is on the faculty of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and Immaculata College. She is also Senior Editor for Food Medication Interactions, an Editor for HIV Medications - Food Interactions and the author of numerous articles in pharmaceutical publications.
 
This article is based on the food and medication interaction books named above and highlights food-drug interactions that are common for HIV-positive people. The authors discuss mechanisms of food-drug interactions, pharmacodynamics, nutrient kinetics, and the effects of food on drug pharmacokinetics. The authors also review the effects of drugs on food and nutrition, modification of medication action including interactions with alcohol and the effects of drugs on nutritional status.
